Curriculum Vitae

Bruce Forwood is an architect and academic with a long standing interest in the design of energy efficient buildings. As a Senior Lecturer in Building Environmental Science he has been involved in teaching the principles of low energy design to undergraduate architecture students as well as coordinating the graduate Sustainable Design program in the Faculty’s Master of Design Science. In this program he teaches the principles of energy conscious building design, thermal comfort and building energy analysis

His other appointments include: Visiting Scholar, Department of Architecture, Chalmers University, Gothenburg, Sweden, 1996, 1997, 2001; and Visiting Senior Lecturer, Welsh School of Architecture, Cardiff University, United Kingdom, 1986, 2001 –2002

He has been a member of the Australian and New Zealand Solar Energy Society and the International Solar Energy Society since the early 80’s and has been a regular contributor to their conferences. He is a former President of the Australian and New Zealand Architectural Science Association and was  Head of the Department of Architectural and Design Science at the University of Sydney from 1993 until 1999 prior to its incorporation into the School of Architecture, Design Science and Planning.

Research Interest

His current research interests include:

  • the exploration of the form and space making potential of the principles of low energy design
  • the exploration of methodologies for integrating the teaching of ecological sustainability with architectural form making and space making
  • evaluating the impacts of proposed urban developments upon thermal comfort in outdoor urban spaces
